Trek launches women's road team led by Lizzie Deignan

Lizzie Deignan

Jul 16 2018 08:50 pm CET Trek has announced the creation of a women's road team for the 2019 season.

Deignan is the first of a dozen names to be added to the Trek women's team roster, which will hit the road at the start of next season.

The 29-year-old will spend the rest of this year working as an ambassador for Trek and has a contract with the new team until the end of 2020, covering her primary goals of the 2019 UCI road world championships on home soil in Yorkshire and the Tokyo Olympics. "Trek Factory Racing has strong female athletes in enduro, downhill, cross country, and cyclocross".

"Trek is committed to changing the world by inspiring more people to ride and our world-class women's road team will be filled with passionate racers who are out to inspire", commented Trek President John Burke. The team will be led by multiple British champion Lizzie Deignan.

This commitment comes with the confirmation of a dedicated director sportif, assistant director sportif, and support staff as well as shared support from the Trek-Segafredo men's team staff.

"Rather than seeing me as a risk in pregnancy, they [Trek] saw me as in investment and a valued athlete", Deignan said. "It creates an environment where everyone thrives", said Trek's Sports Marketing Director Tim Vanderjeugd. Burke said the plan was very much for the men's and women's team to run side by side, sharing training camps and resources, although they would be separate entities.

"Women's cycling has its own characteristics and we will support that to give them also the best possible visibility".

On the move, Deignan has expressed her delight saying she's "thrilled" to sign as, "the goals of the team perfectly align with my personal and professional goals". The news of Trek being the title sponsor of new team could mean that Drops needs to find a new sponsor.
