Trump 'will be forced to impose Russian Federation sanctions'

WH considering Putin proposal to let Russia interrogate ex-US ambassador financier

President Trump said that he told Russian leader Vladimir Putin during their summit in Helsinki that "we can't have meddling" in U.S. elections.

"Both leaders seek to curtail American influence, weaken United States alliances and modify the global system so it is more favourable to them", Bonnie Glaser of the Centre for Strategic and worldwide Studies in Washington said in an email.

Mr. Trump also expressed confidence in Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, whose dire warnings about US hacking vulnerabilities he had questioned in a previous interview.

"Well, I accept. I mean, he's an expert", Mr. Trump said Wednesday. "This is what he does".

He also accused past American leaders, rather than Russia's destabilising actions in the U.S. and around the world, for the souring of relations between two countries. His response followed words of alarm last week from National Intelligence Director Dan Coats, who said warning lights about overall cyberthreats to the US were "blinking red" - much as "blinking red" signals before the 9/11 terror attacks. "I'm not sure we can change his mind about it, but I'll tell you, we can pass a law that does something about it". "It better not be".

The Hermitage Capital CEO Bill Browder said he hasn't heard from anyone in the Trump administration and called the idea of handing over senior US officials to the Russians "just beyond belief".

He also said he had warned Vladimir Putin to stay out of American elections.

"No, you don't believe that to be the case?" the reporter asked over the din.

'There's no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime, ' Rosenstein said in announcing the charges at a press conference in Washington. "I can only say that I do have confidence in our intelligence agencies as now constituted". I think it was a strong news conference. I think that [CIA Director] Gina [Haspel] is excellent.

"My people came to me and they said they think it's Russian Federation".

In an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson to air at 8 p.m., Trump answered Brennan's condemnation of the president's remarks at the Helsinki summit as "nothing short of treasonous".

But while Trump's charm offensive might cause Beijing a twinge of unease, given its tumultuous history with Moscow, in this love triangle, Putin and Xi are linked by strategic necessity, plus genuine personal affection, analysts said.

On Wednesday, the president said he now has confidence in intelligence agencies, but blasted former leaders like former DNI James Clapper and former CIA Directors John Brennan and Michael Hayden. Stephen Colbert (video below), said, "So this afternoon Trump went into emergency spin mode and summoned Republican leaders to the White House to watch his induction into the lying hall of fame".

Chuck Schumer, leader of the opposition Democrats in the Senate, said Mr Trump's retraction of his previous comments was a sign of weakness. "So when he sees that he has misspoken, he comes out and he says that".

The loudest was a reporter asking, "Is Russia still targeting the U.S., Mr. President?"

Mr. Trump spoke to reporters as he met with a group of GOP lawmakers at the White House.

Browder said on Fox Business Network that it was "just shocking" for Trump's spokeswoman to say they were considering letting Russian Federation question USA officials.

The proposal arose at Monday's summit between the USA president Donald Trump and the Russian president Vladimir Putin, and any decision by Washington to assist with an adversary's prosecution of former government employees overseas would be a stunning shift in United States policy, especially as it could violate the global legal principle of diplomatic immunity.

The White House is denying that President Trump believes Russian Federation is no longer targeting USA elections and other infrastructure, despite his apparent answer to a reporter's question Wednesday morning.

Mr Trump has been scrambling to undo the damage from his comments on Monday, in which he gave credence to Mr Putin's denials over the conclusions of American intelligence services.

Faced with outrage at home, Trump said Tuesday that he accepted the intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation had meddled in the election.
