Falcons Wont Renegotiate Julio Jones Contract

Report Falcons commit to renegotiate with Julio Jones after 2018 season

- The Atlanta Falcons have told All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones they will not renegotiate his contract before the upcoming National Football League season, FOX 5 Sports has confirmed.

According to Jeff Schultz of The Athletic, the Falcons "have informed" Jones "they have no plans to give him the raise he is seeking before the 2018 season".

The Falcons explained to Jones that they do not have the money budgeted for a renegotiation with him in 2018.

He signed a five-year, $71.25 million extension in August of 2015 that included $47 million guaranteed. Since then, seven other receivers have acquired bigger deals.

Much has been made of Jones' holdout. Jones missed both voluntary OTAs as well as June's mandatory minicamp. Even if Jones was only asking for an updated contract as has been reported, the likelihood of him getting a significant raise was never good.

Some of his teammates may be in line to get a new deal before Jones. "Jones is only two years into a five-year contract, and the team's front office is focused on extending the expiring deals of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, left tackle Jake Matthews and safety Ricardo Allen". All were major contributors to Atlanta's run to Super Bowl LI in 2016, as well as last year's playoff appearance.

Julio Jones has given a lot to the Falcons, as well.

The fact that someone in the Falcons organization publicly commented does not sit well with Jones, sources told Schefter, and Jones now will have to decide whether or not to attend training camp next week.

Training Camp begins next Thursday, and the Falcons fully expect Julio to be present during the opening scrimmages, Friday morning at 9:20 a.m.
