IOC adds 7 medal events to 2022 Beijing Winter Games

President of the IOC Bach opens the Executive Board meeting in Lausanne

In addition to Big Air Skiing finally being added to the Olympic games repertoire, the IOC is looking to equal out gender participation with "more female athletes and women's events than any other Olympic Winter Games, with female quota positions increasing from 41% to 45.44 %".

The disciplines of skeleton, speed skating, Alpine skiing, cross country, freestyle and snowboard will all move to gender balance for the first time.

The FIS Congress 2018 chose to propose further competitions for inclusion on the Games program: nordic combined Ladies' individual event, snowboard alpine mixed team parallel event, snowboard parallel slalom, and telemark parallel sprint, but they will not be on the program for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Beijing will also represent the highest number of women at an Olympic Winter Games and the highest number of events.

The changes were also made within the goal of maintaining total athlete counts as outlined in the Olympic Charter and goals set in Olympic Agenda 2020 to reduce the overall size of the games.

Following the announcement of the principles [that can be found here], WSF and PSA reiterated squash's readiness to bid and to demonstrate why the sport will be a great strategic choice for inclusion in the Olympic programme.

Mixed team events, in which both men and women compete together, have always been a staple of Youth Olympic Games as well, and they're becoming more popular on the full Games program as well.

OlympicTalk is on Apple News.

Youthful and urban-focused events such as basketball 3x3, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing will feature throughout the Games schedule.

Two years and one week before the Tokyo Olympics open, the International Olympic Committee published a detailed schedule Wednesday of when competitions will take place.

"The whole sport is truly united in our desire to participate in the selection process and to show the strong attributes that squash can bring to the International Olympic Committee and to Paris 2024 in the context of the on-going New Norm and Agenda 2020 reforms". No new venues will be needed to host the new events. If approved, these sports may be considered for final inclusion in the last step of the process.

In parallel, the event programme and athlete quotas for existing sports will also be finalised in December 2020.
