No confidence motion: PM Modi calls for disruption-free debate in House

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi looks on during the keynote address at the IISS Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore

Tweeting hours ahead of the vote, the Prime Minister wrote, "Today is an important day in our Parliamentary democracy".

"I am sure my fellow MP colleagues will rise to the occasion and ensure a constructive, comprehensive and disruption-free debate". We owe this to the people & the makers of our Constitution.

"India will be watching us closely", the Prime Minister said.

In April, PM Modi announced that the Rs 76,000 crore Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) project was completed with the electrification of around 18,000 villages.

Opposition parties have brought the motion against the government on several issues like special status to Andhra Pradesh, cow vigilantism, lynchings, atrocities against women and Dalits and alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its own has 273 Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, excluding Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, which in itself will take it past the majority mark of 267, in a reduced house size of 532. Congress, the main opposition party, has been allocated 38 minutes to present its views on the motion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today accused the previous Congress-led UPA government of leaving a large number of villages un-electrified despite remaining in power most of the time after Independence.

The Congress said it wants to show mirror to the government while CPI-M said dethroning the ruling combine is never its priority as it wants to highlight issues being faced by people and especially the farmers.

BJP has reached out to disgruntled allies to gather their support and even reached out to friendly parties to abstain if they can't support.

The debate will be initiated by Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Meanwhile, taking a dig at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav tweeted, "Congress would have 38 minutes for an quake in the House".
