Samsung, Xiaomi corner 60% share of India's smartphone market in Q2: Canalys

Samsung almost beat Xiaomi in India with a strong Q2 performance

The best-selling phone in Q2 was the Xiaomi Redmi 5A with 3.3 million units shipped, giving it a healthy margin over Samsungs best seller – the Galaxy J2 Pro (2018) with 2.3 million.

"Xiaomi more than doubled its shipments, albeit from a modest base, just putting it in first place".

Overall smartphone shipments grew by 22%, to just under 33 million units, Canalys said. Vivo took the third place with 3.6 million shipments while Oppo is in the fourth position with 3.1 million shipments respectively.

Samsung's annual growth rate hit almost 50 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2015.

For years, Samsung has been the major player in the smartphone business in India until Xiaomi's influx into the market cost the company its 'most trusted brand' title.

Samsung has bounced back and is only a hair behind Xiaomi in terms of shipments, after losing its lead in the previous two quarters. It was a bad quarter for Samsung's chief global rival, Apple, as the iPhone shipments were down by about 50% in India.

Samsung almost beat Xiaomi in India with a strong Q2 performance

For comparison, Samsung shipped just under 7.5 million units and held 25% market share in India in Q1 this year, while Xiaomi shipped over 9 million units and captured 31% market share.

During the quarter, Canalsys said, Samsung launched devices pitted directly against Xiaomi's portfolio and is focusing on its cameras and imaging capabilities with Portrait Dolly and Background Blur Shape functions.

Asus seems to have flipped its luck in the Indian market lately and is eyeing for Xiaomi's spot in the smartphone business, having tripled its fortune since the first quarter of the year. "Its technological prowess and supply chain mastery will continue to give it an edge over Xiaomi for the foreseeable future".

Asus recently turned its India strategy on its head, moving from a distributor-driven go-to-market model to a single partner, online-first strategy with Flipkart. Canalys revealed that shipments of Asus nearly tripled since the previous quarter. Both the brands now has 30% market share in the country, but Samsung is slightly behind Xiaomi says Canalys.

"Volume is not the only strategy in India. The climate is right for businesses to realign and re-enter the market", said Rushabh Doshi, Research Manager at Canalys.

"Getting priorities right will be important to smartphone vendors, and it will be a choice between profitability and volume growth", Doshi said.
