Crowded leaderboard at midway point of British Open

Aggressive Mc Ilroy doing it his way not the fairway

Kevin Kisner was set to take the outright clubhouse lead at the halfway stage of the British Open before a double-bogey at the 18th at Carnoustie forced him back alongside Zach Johnson at six under par.

"You're only going to ever get to play the first time with him once, and that was mine", Knox said. It is irrelevant to me.

"A lot of the shots I was looking up and I was really happy they were going straight".

On the longest day - from Sandy Lyle hitting the opening tee shot at 6:35 a.m. and the group including newcomer Bronson Burgoon finishing off the first round almost 13 hours later - everyone had their own style of getting around the course reputed to be the toughest links in golf. His opening round of even par 71 was typical of his recent performances - a bright start with a couple of front nine birdies blighted by a some late bogeys, not enhanced by the once routine back nine blitz.

Tommy Fleetwood is in contention this weekend to become England's first Open champion since Nick Faldo in 1992.

"It was pretty good, but it's not a course record", he said.

"That's the beauty this golf course is right now", said Johnson, Kisner's housemate, in a mosh pit of players tied at two under. Rory McIlroy, perhaps his generation's best player across the board, sits one more stroke back, as does Matt Kuchar, the victim of wicked fate (and Jordan Spieth) past year at this tournament. I've never been anywhere near before. These two rounds exhibit examples - McIlroy embracing his youthful instincts to attack, while limiting that daredevilry to ensure it does not boil over into a golfing meltdown.

But that could change if he finds a way to keep scoring as he found a way to stay dry in the second round of the British Open.

The umbrellas were up and the waterproofs out as rain greeted the players at the start.

"I learned that everybody's going through the same stuff and trying to shoot the lowest score possible, and everybody puts their trousers on the same way I do...probably left leg first", he says in his slow SC drawl.

Three of Kisner's housemates also were under par - PGA champion Justin Thomas (69), two-time major champion Zach Johnson (70) and Fowler (70).

His decision to use his driver - which he used just once on the par-five sixth in his first round - at the second proved to be the wrong one, but it was nearly more costly for spectators.

Having carved a shot into a bank of rough he attempted a raking hook with the ball above his feet at nearly waist height, but it came out low and hard and skirted inches away from the packed gallery he had only just asked to move back.

"That was one of them", Woods said. "I would rather fail by trying 100% than by holding back and maybe not giving myself the opportunity to do well", said McIlroy.

"It (grass) grabbed the shaft and smothered it".

"Obviously, I've had a decent career up until this point, and I've got a lot of time left to add to my major tally or just tournaments won or whatever it is".

"Just helping me support my neck a little bit". As to how a person shoots 72 in the sunlight and then 65 in the downpour, he said of this odd sport, "Just a golf thing, I think".
