I got inside a Tour de France team's closed-door strategy meeting

Yellow jersey holder Geraint Thomas hit back at the doubters on Friday by claiming Team Sky is racing "100 percent" clean at the Tour de France.

But the Belgian was caught with 300 metres to go, leaving Bora-Hansgrohe's Sagan to extend his green jersey points lead with victory in the final metres over Kristoff of UAE Team Emirates, with both overhauling French hope Arnaud Demare of Groupama-FDJ.

Defending champion Chris Froome, who has often been subjected to negative treatment from Tour de France fans, was booed all the way up to the summit and one spectator ran alongside the Briton before slapping him on the shoulder.

Thomas did ask for fans to not interfere in the race after Froome was slapped on the back going up Alpe d'Huez and contender Vincenzo Nibali was forced to quit after he broke a vertebra when knocked to the ground by a police motorbike tasked with keeping back the crowd.

Fernando Gaviria and Dylan Groenewegen, who both won two stages on this Tour, along with Andre Greipel all abandoned the race on Thursday, while 30-stage victor Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel failed to make the time cut on Wednesday. Primoz Roglic was fourth at 2:46, and Romain Bardet was fifth at 3:07 back.

Tom Dumoulin stayed third overall at 1:50 behind.

"I think the organisers had tried to put in a few special precautions to stop those kind of things happening", Froome said.

The fans seemed to be directing most of their ire-filled over-enthusiasm toward Froome, the four-time Tour victor from Team Sky who was cleared of doping accusations days before the Tour began earlier this month.

After the drama of Alpe D'Huez, Friday's 169.5 kilometer stage from Bourg d'Oisans to Valence was a far more straightforward affair.

There had been fears about security on Alpe d'Huez with Froome still facing lingering ill-feeling among some cycling fans following the salbutamol case in which he was cleared of wrong-doing just days before the Tour began, while Sky have often faced a mixed reception in France due to their dominance of the Tour in recent years.

However, four-time Tour victor Froome said he felt more could be done.

Welshman Thomas, who takes a 1min 39sec lead over Froome into Saturday's undulating stage to Mende, said he is prepared for the flak.

"As a Frenchman, I'm ashamed", Sky sports director Nicolas Portal said.

"Who knows how long (Geraint) can hold this top level?"

And Froome seems eager for the action to return.
