Trump Dumps Cohen: It's 'Perhaps Illegal' For Lawyer To Record Client Calls

Calling it "inconceivable" that a lawyer would record a client without their knowledge, Trump suggested the act was "perhaps illegal", but clarified that he "did nothing wrong!" in an early morning tweet.

While, such tapes do not necessarily imply guilt on the part of Cohen or the President, Trump's reaction certainly doesn't sound like something coming from an individual with nothing to worry about.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Friday that President Donald Trump did not know he was secretly taped by ex-lawyer Michael Cohen as they discussed a possible payment to an ex-Playboy model over an alleged affair, according to news reports.

The tape was reportedly made two months before the election. The payment was never made, he said.

The recording - which was made shortly before the presidential election - was seized during an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on Cohen's office in April, the Times reported, citing lawyers and others familiar with the recording.

The FBI investigation stemmed in part from a referral by the USA special counsel's office, which is looking into possible coordination during the election campaign between Trump's aides and Russian officials.

He added that Trump had directed Cohen that if he were to make any payment, write a check, versus sending cash, so it could be documented.

A representative for McDougal has not responded to requests for comment.

The erstwhile Trump loyalist has hired a new attorney, Clinton White House veteran Lanny Davis, and disassociated himself from the president as both remain under investigation.

The president has said that Mr Trump is no longer his personal lawyer.

McDougal has alleged that she began a yearlong affair with Trump in 2006.

The recording was first reported Friday by The New York Times.

She sold her story for $150,000 in August 2016 but it was never published by the National Enquirer, a practice known as "catch and kill" to prevent a potentially damaging story from becoming public. Cohen has not been charged with a crime.

Cohen said he paid Daniels $130,000 in exchange for her silence about her claim of the affair.
