Anthony is shipped to Hawks, will be waived

Carmelo Anthony

The Thunder could've waived Anthony or used the stretch provision on his contract instead of a trade, but chose to move him for a pair of players who could be useful on next season's team.

Last season, Anthony put up 16.2 points per game on 40.4 percent shooting in a diminished role. The veteran National Basketball Association forward and a 2022 protected first-round pick were sent to Atlanta in exchange for guard Dennis Schroder and Mike Muscala.

Justin Anderson will go to Atlanta from Philadelphia and Mike Muscala heads the other way. The German guard averaged 19.4 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 67 games with the Hawks last season. The question is can the Hawks find a way to rid themselves of his contract before the start of the new season?

Oklahoma City's paramount concern was shedding Anthony's salary - a whopping $27.9 million. It took time for Anthony to adapt, and he never completely got comfortable playing as a catch-and-shoot stretch-4. In trading him, they shaved $62 million off their luxury tax bill, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The team drafted its point guard of the future in Trae Young, as well as a capable backup/starter and veteran leader to pair with him at the one in Jeremy Lin. But with the departure of LeBron James to the Lakers in the Western Conference and the lineup, the Celtics will boast, the Celtics look like the early favorites to emerge from the Eastern Conference next season.

The Rockets seemingly have been the front-runner for Anthony's services all summer.

Dennis Schroder appears to be pleased with the idea of soon suiting up for the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are getting Shroder and the 76ers' Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot.

If the Thunder couldn't have found a trade partner, they likely would have used the stretch provision to release the 10-time All-Star by August 31 so the $27.9 million he is owed next season would have been paid over the course of the next three seasons.
