Big Island under tropical storm watch

The storm is moving westward at 16 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service (NWS) briefed Hawai'i Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA), local emergency management and civil defense agencies, and federal and state partners Monday morning, August 6, 2018, about Hurricane Hector, which has reached Category 4 strength. The National Weather Service says Hurricane Hector is expected to pass south of the Big Island Tuesday night and Wednesday as it moves westward. It had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour (100 kph) and was heading northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 kph).

"On the forecast track, Hector is expected to pass roughly 150 miles south of the Big Island of Hawaii on Wednesday".

"Maximum sustained winds are near 155 miles per hour (250 km/h) with higher gusts".

According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, the center of the storm was located about 850 miles east of Hilo or 1,055 miles east-southeast of Honolulu.

Tropical Storm Ileana had been projected to reach hurricane force while marching northwestward parallel to Mexico's southwestern coast, bringing heavy surf, but forecasters said the storm was no longer expected to strengthen and should dissipate by late Tuesday because of the effects of the larger Hurricane John. It was forecast to peak as a Category 3 hurricane before starting to weaken while staying to the west of the Baja California Peninsula during the week.

Hector is in an area with low vertical wind shear, which has allowed it to intensify into a powerful hurricane.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for Hawaii County.

The potential impacts include localised rainfall flooding and fierce winds could prompt a few evacuations in Big Island.

People are being warned swimming and boating will be risky towards the end of the week as rough seas and strong rip currents will affect eastern and southern-facing coasts.
