Uber drivers log off to protest upfront pricing and pooling

For-hire drivers and supporters rallied in favor of a measure to limit ride-hailing vehicles outside the headquarters of New York’s Taxi and Limousine Commission

Thousands of rideshare drivers across Australia are expected to log-off during Monday morning's peak-hour in a bid to make transport giant Uber change its ways.

One of RDSU's demands is that the ridesharing company stop using upfront pricing, and return to a system where drivers are paid for the actual time and distance traveled.

Drivers who opt in for UberPOOL, where a rider shares a vehicle with other users, should be paid the equivalent of base UberX rates plus at least an extra 20 percent, reads the demand.

The protest also calls to increase UberX rates by at least 15 per cent.

"The issue we raise is countrywide and mostly in Melbourne and Sydney", said Max, spokesman for the group.

Drivers that are in support of the bill, both from taxi companies and within Uber and Lyft, claim that a spike in traffic, drop-off in productivity, and steep decline in the value of taxi medallions from over $1 million down to less than $200,000 are all results of ride-sharing's now unchecked rise in the city.

New York City officials will vote this week on whether or not to cap the number of ride-sharing vehicles from apps like Uber and Lyft at the current level and bar any new vehicles from operating, save those that are handicap accessible.

"We have a range of channels for driver-partners to engage with Uber and provide feedback including regular roundtables and focus groups, partner support centres around Australia, plus phone and 24/7 in-app support", she said.

An Uber spokeswoman told AAP the company wanted successful driver-partners so had invested in technology to encourage more riders to share tips about the best times and places to drive.

"Drivers who choose to take UberPool rides should be better compensated and not the other way around", RDSU's post reads.

Uber drivers alleged the ride-share business was paying them according to the upfront estimate given to customers, not the figure on the meter which was usually higher.

If Uber does not comply with the demands, similar strike action could happen as early as next week.
