Meteor shower of the year coming up

The Perseid meteor shower is perhaps the most beloved meteor shower of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. Best of all, the slender waxing crescent moon will set at early evening, providing deliciously dark skies for this year's Perseid meteors. "You should be able to see some meteors from July 17 to August 24, with the rates increasing during the weeks before August 12 and decreasing after the 13th", NASA said in a skywatching video.

The comet has a 133-year orbit, last visiting our part of the solar system back in 1992 (hence the big meteor show back in the 90s).

During the Perseids' peak on the nights of August 11-12 and August 12-13, skywatchers should see about 60 to 70 meteors per hour, Space.com said.

Even though this may be somewhat of a down year, the Perseids still typically are one of the best meteor shows of the year.

The meteors we see in August are fragments left by the comet Swift-Tuttle.

"Under a very dark sky, you might see up to one Perseid per minute late on Sunday night or after midnight on Monday morning".

In 2018, the peak night of this shower will be totally free of moonlight.

Perhaps you might remember an awesome meteor show back in the early 1990s?

Travelling at a speedy 37 miles a second, they come from the direction of the constellation Perseus. That was most likely the Perseids. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky so try and find an open area, away from street lights.

Just be aware of any local light pollution from lamps and buildings that might make the skies brighter during the peak.

The meteors are incredibly fast moving and trying to spot them with a telescope or high-powered binoculars would only complicate matters.

The beauty of meteor-watching is that you just need your eyes.

If you head out, do not forget to pack something warm for the night, snacks, drinks, blankets and give your eyes up to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark of night. For the best viewing, make sure you get away from city lights.
