Aftershock measuring 6.2 is third quake to hit Lombok in week

An Indonesian soldier and an official try to calm people shortly after an aftershock hits the area in Tanjung on Lombok island

A strong natural disaster with a magnitude of 6.2 hit the Indonesian island of Lombok island on Thursday, causing some buildings to collapse, according to witnesses and the Southeast Asian nation's meteorology and geophysics agency.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that at least 131 people were killed in Sunday's quake, but other agencies say the death toll has risen to more than 300. It also reported a 5.4-magnitude quake at 2.21am on Tuesday, close to the site of Sunday's 6.9-magnitude quake.

Evacuees in some encampments say they are running out of food, while others are suffering psychological trauma after the powerful quake.

The buildings still standing have been weakened, . and the authorities say the number of dead and injured is likely to increase as rescue efforts continue.

The military said it sent five planes carrying food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers.

But her story underscores the challenges facing this devastated region: "Four days after the quake killed hundreds of people and displaced 270,000 more, injured survivors in remote areas cut off by landslides and broken bridges are still emerging from the ruined countryside, struggling to reach the doctors they desperately need". "Where should we go if we have no house anymore, nowhere to live?" said the mother of 15- and 9-year-old girls.

Lombok was hit by another quake on Thursday, the third in little over a week, causing panic and damage to buildings.

He said they were also looking for people with untreated injuries.

"Her son managed to get out from the house when the natural disaster hit but the grandmother and grandson were left behind", said a relative Nani Wijayanti. "The grandson tried to help the grandmother to get out but he pushed too hard", she said.

Emergency personnel raced to evacuate tourists from the three small islands, famous for their white sandy beaches and clear waters, which are near the epicenter of the quake on Lombok.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.

The island is a popular holiday spot and thousands of tourists have now left. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. "Who will rebuild and how much money and how long it takes".
