Age shouldn't be criteria for selection: Sachin Tendulkar

Tendulkar is an India under-19 worldwide who has also turned out for Ealing, the MCC Young Cricketers, and three Mumbai age group teams.

Indian cricket icon Tendulkar supported England's decision to give the chance to youngsters like Sam Curran and Ollie Pope in the ongoing their Test series against India.

Curran showed maturity in the second innings as he batted through while no other England batsman could score above 30 runs.

Curran tore through the Indian top order in their first innings in Birmingham, taking the wickets of Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and, later, Hardik Pandya on only his second Test appearance for England. "Age should never the criteria", Sachin told ESPNCricinfo.

"When I was selected to play my first game (against Pakistan in 1989) I was 16". In a way, it only helped. I did not know what it was to play against Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Abdul Qadir.

The team drafted in Arjun Tendulkar, 18-year-old son of Indian legend Sachin and left-arm fast bowler, to put them through their paces in Tuesday's nets session.

Tendulkar urged Curran and Pope to enjoy the challenge that has come their way because he feels that only makes worldwide cricket so fascinating.

Sachin, who was speaking as part of opening his cricket academy in association with English county Middlesex, also said that when players are young they do not seen the other side of the coin and just have fun and perform. "There are going to be tough moments but that's what you practice for".

Curran made his Test and one-day global debut for England earlier this year and his swing bowling, especially against the Indian top order, impressed his peers.
