Cricketer Ben Stokes accused of lying to the jury over 'homophobic abuse'

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has told a court he was acting in self-defence when he allegedly assaulted a man outside a Bristol nightclub a year ago.

The England cricketer, 27, insisted he had intervened to stop Ali, and Ryan Hale, 27, from abusing gay men William O'Connor and Kai Barry.

The all-rounder is being cross-examined by prosecutors at Bristol Crown Court on the fifth day of his trial over affray allegations, which he denies.

Stokes denied he was "enraged" in the clip, and said he could not hear his colleague because "there was a lot of shouting at the time".

Mr Hale was acquitted of affray on Thursday.

During proceedings, Stokes admitted punching Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale in the fight outside of Mbargo nightclub in the early hours of 25th September past year.

"I'd say I was verbally saying "I don't think you should be saying that to these two guys because they're gay", he said.

Stokes told the court he had not mocked or been homophobic towards Mr Barry and Mr O'Connor outside Mbargo.

"I was told by Mr Ali along the lines of "Shut the f*** up or I will bottle you".

"He then turns his attention away from me and starts charging towards my friend, Ryan Hale, who is still unconscious in the road", he said.

"You didn't suffer from memory loss problems, so how can you not remember striking Mr Ali with such force, rendering him unconscious?"

The lawyer for Ali - who suffered multiple eye injuries as a result of the incident on 25 September - told Stokes that he was refusing to "take responsibility" for his behaviour.

When questioned by the prosecution, he denied knocking out Mr Ali or being very drunk.

He said he accepted at one stage turning a bottle upside down in order "to defend myself".

Stokes was asked about what Ali was doing in the moments before he knocked him out and he said he could not remember.

Asked if he was hiding recollections of the night, he said: "No, all my actions were in self-defence and fearing for my safety". I can make my own perception from all of the CCTV.

Mr Stokes, of Castle Eden, Durham, was arrested in the early hours along with Mr Ali, of Bristol, and Mr Hale, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.

The fight took place several hours after England had played a one-day global against the West Indies at the city's County Ground.

Earlier, the court heard from Mr Stokes's teammate Jake Ball who described him as being "in a good mood" before the alleged incident.

When the prosecutor asked what Mr Stokes was looking at, he said: "I might just be looking at the night sky".
