Eagles, 'Fins players protest during anthem

"Meanwhile, there has been no change in the NFL's policy regarding the national anthem".

Wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson, both of the Miami Dolphins, kneeled during The Star-Spangled Banner, ahead of their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.

Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett, a frequent protestor previous year when he played for the Seattle Seahawks, walked out of the tunnel as the anthem played.

Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins resumed his protest against social inequality by raising his fist during the national anthem prior to Thursday's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The anthem will continue to be played before every game, and all player and non-player personnel on the field at that time are expected to stand during the presentation of the flag and performance of the anthem. The players included Jalen Ramsey, Telvin Smith, Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon.

Jefferson, Jackson and Brown were among the Seahawks players who sat during the anthem last season.

A dozen games were played Thursday night.

The anthem controversy has been rumbling since 2016, when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the anthem to draw attention to racial injustice.

Some players held their fists in the air, while others made a decision to kneel, despite the controversy surrounding the action.

After withstanding two seasons of backlash against players kneeling, raising fists and displaying other means of protest during the anthem, the National Football League said it would fine teams with protesting players directly, who in turn would have it in their discretion to enforce pregame anthem observations in their own ways.

The new policy was met with a lot of disdain from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), who stated that they were not consulted prior to the NFL's decision being publicized.
