At least four people have been killed in a shooting in Fredericton, N.B., police have confirmed.

The Fredericton Police Department tweeted Friday morning to caution residents to avoid Brookside Drive due to an "ongoing incident".

In a series of tweets the police said, "we can confirm multiple fatalities". An incident has resulted in at least four people killed. Refresh your page to make sure you are seeing the most current information.

They said residents should stay in their homes "with doors locked at this time for safety".

It happened in the Brookside Drive area where there are a number of shops and houses.

The incident in the town of Fredericton is said to be "ongoing".

"It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop".
