Hackers compromise PGA of America files

Hackers have taken control of the PGA of America servers and demanded a bitcoin ransom in the days leading up to the start of the major golf tournament in St Louis.

Disturbing news Wednesday night from the PGA, as Golfweek is reporting that PGA servers have been hacked.

According to the report, when staffers tried to access files a message was generated stating: "Your network has been penetrated".

The files contained creative materials for both events, including "extensive promotional banners and logos used in digital and print communications, and on digital signage around the grounds at Bellerive", along with logo designs for future PGA Championships, Lynch reported.

The hackers also listed a bitcoin wallet number - which is almost impossible to trace - but no specific ransom amount. Some of that work has been going on for more than a year and "cannot be easily replaced", Lynch writes.

The hackers sent over an encrypted email address so PGA officials could send over two files that they would decrpyt to prove they were serious.

"We exclusively have decryption software for your situation".

In the meantime, the PGA and IT experts are addressing the problem, but have yet to regain control of the files.

An anonymous source from the PGA of America said that the association does not intend to meet any extortion demands, and could speak no further because they were not authorized to speak on the subject.
