Celebrities including Amy Schumer and Alexa Chung have launched a coordinated campaign urging Ivanka Trump to speak out against the effects of the Trump administration's family separation policy and to call for the resignation of the secretary of homeland security Kirstjen Nielsen. On Thursday, Ivanka Trump finally spoke up about the family separations at the border, telling an audience in Washington that the crisis was a "low point" of her time working in the White House.

The social media campaign, which has now gone viral, has seen celebrities post a letter to the first daughter of US President Donald Trump. "I feel very strongly about that and I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children so I would agree with that sentiment. Approximately 400 parents have been deported without their children", the posts continued.

The open letter points out the many abuses that these children have had to endure, including "multiple claims of sexual and physical abuse" and the use of "psychotropic drugs administered to children" without their parents' consent. These abuses have occurred on your father's watch and under the leaderships of Secretary Nielsen.

The identical "Dear Ivanka" posts started popping up on the social media site on Monday, less than a week after the 36-year-old Trump said at a forum that the separations of parents and children at the border were a "low point" for her. End these racist, inhuman and unconscionable abuses now!

She admitted it "was a low point" of her time in the White House during an Axios News Shapers conversation.

"These are not easy issues, these are incredibly hard issues and like the rest of the country, I experienced them actually in a very emotional way", Trump said. She added that "immigration is incredibly complex as a topic".

They tagged Ms Trump in the Instagram posts so that the message would show up in her notifications. "Illegal immigration is incredibly complicated".

President Trump signed an executive order in June ending the administration's family separation policy amid widespread criticism.
