Indian envoy calls on Imran Khan, hopes to improve relations

The acting US Ambassador to Pakistan John Hoover in conversation with prime-minister-to-be Imran Khan at his Banigala residence

The PTI's parliamentary committee on Monday had officially named party chairman Imran Khan as their parliamentary leader and nominee for the next prime minister of Pakistan.

The Iranian president congratulated Mr Khan over his party's victory in the recent elections.

The entire squad that Khan captained to victory in the 1992 World Cup was invited to the ceremony, as well as Indian cricket greats Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu.

"In a historic moment, Imran Khan will take the oath (as prime minister) on August 18", Faisal Javed Khan, a PTI senator and Khan's close aide, said in televised comments in Islamabad.

Imran is expected to swear in as the next PM of the country on August 18, the Election Commission of Pakistan has allowed him to temporarily take oath as the Member of National Assembly while there is an ongoing case on the violation of the electoral code of conduct against him.

On July 30, the Election Commission of Pakistan had sought a written reply from Mr Khan, who has been nominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as the next Prime Minister after the party emerged as the largest in the National Assembly in the election.

Earlier, President Mamnoon Hussain made a decision to postpone his foreign trip in order to administer oath to the next prime minister. There is another glitch which may delay his oath taking for a few more days as President Hussain is proceeding on a three-day visit to Ireland on August 16.

"The president will now embark on his trip after the oath-taking ceremony", the report said.

A written reply and an affidavit were submitted by the PTI chief earlier in the day during a hearing held by a four-member bench that was headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza.

Imran had contested from five constituencies and had won from all of them.

Mr Khan said: "I am glad that people in the United States have ultimately started acknowledging significance of political solution as conflict and use of force can add to the damages instead of breeding a sustainable solution to the crisis".
