Internet used weekly by 89% of United Kingdom adults - ONS

The proportion of adults streaming on-demand content has risen from 29 per cent in 2016 to 46 per cent

89 per cent of Brit households had internet access, a figure that was flat year-on-year - and one which may have the architects of the UK's universal service obligation scratching their heads about getting the last 10 per cent online.

While the ONS said that the most popular online activity in 2018 is sending or receiving emails, with 84% of adults doing this, it noted the "large growth in the proportion of adults who watched videos online". The study also indicates that the percentage of households with some kind of internet access has not changed since previous year, remaining at 90 per cent. The proportion of those who had not used the internet in the last three months has also fallen from 40% to 9% over the same time period.

Internet use itself has gone up, with 86 per cent of over-16s saying they use the internet every day. Nearly 9 in 10 (89 per cent) of Brits used the internet at least once a week in the first half of this year, up from half the population in 2006.

In addition, for the first time the survey says that 100 per cent of households with children living in them have Internet access.

Almost a third of Britons don't think they have the required computer skills to do their jobs despite 9 in 10 households having internet access, according to the Office for National Statistics. As for YouTube, arguably the most popular free video streaming service out there, the numbers rose from 47 per cent to 62 per cent. 58 per cent of people claimed to have streamed some sort of music, up from 49 per cent. A slightly smaller proportion also use it for finding information about goods or service and, after that, the closure of high street banks may be contributing to a sharp rise in online banking (see below).
