Liverpool Send Danny Ings to Southampton in 11th Hour Deadline Day Move

Southampton manager Mark Hughes believes Danny Ings is an ideal fit for them after the Liverpool striker joined on an initial loan deal.

The striker joined Liverpool in 2015 but struggled to break into the team and those struggles were only made worse by two severe knee injuries.

Asked about the deal becoming permanent next summer, Hughes added: "It is a loan initially but that is probably why the negotiations took so long". He has signed a four-year contract and could make his debut for his new club against former side Burnley on Saturday.

The deal would be made permanent for the England worldwide at St Mary's from July 1, 2019.

Liverpool are guaranteed an £18m up-front fee with a further £2m based on appearances, while they are due 20 per-cent of any future figure should he be sold. The 26-year-old has attracted interest from Premier League clubs.

However, Southampton would be able to offer him more regular football and Ings would be a fitting addition at the St Mary's Stadium.

"It's his home, his family is there, it's his boyhood club".

The Saints were working on the deal throughout Premier League deadline day, but could not complete it by the 5pm deadline and had to slap in a deal sheet to buy themselves more time.

Before the arrival of the former Burnley man, Southampton looked extremely toothless in the final third and were left crying out for a player to provide an impact - which may work in Ings' favour, as he's looking to get his career back-on-track after numerous injury problems during his spell at Anfield.

He returned to fitness last season but was on the fringes of Klopp's squad.

Otherwise, there were no further exits at Anfield with Marko Grujic and Sheyi Ojo remaining at the club for now - though both could sign a loan deal to the Football League or make a permanent move overseas before the end of the month. Pedro Chirivella, Lazar Markovic, Divock Origi and Simon Mignolet could also leave in the next three weeks.
