Novak Djokovic sent Peter Polansky of Canada to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat on Wednesday (Aug 8) as the four-time champion powered into the third round at the Toronto Masters before insisting he's "comfortable" with the controversial "shot clock" innovation.

Rafael Nadal was made to wait before his second-round Rogers Cup match due to several rain delays but did his part to put the schedule back on track with a speedy 6-2 6-3 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire on Wednesday.

Djokovic was seeded ninth in Toronto. Asked during Wimbledon if he would be at the highest level even if Nadal wasn't there, Federer replied: 'I heard comments as well that people didn't think that maybe I would not be but look, if it wouldn't have been Rafa, it would have been somebody else who would have pushed me, and if I would not have been around, somebody else would push, ' Federer said.

"I thought I found pretty good accuracy and angles with the first serve, and also my second serve worked pretty well".

The match was played under threatening grey skies which eventually dumped heavy rain on the courts just after Djokovic wrapped up his win. "In the moments when I probably needed to step it up, I did".

Next up for Djokovic in the round of 16 is Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas, who upset Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem 6-3 7-6 (6).

Wawrinka will face Marton Fucsovics in the second round with a possible clash with Rafael Nadal looming after that.

Defending champion Alexander Zverev, seeded second and victor at the weekend in Washington, also advanced easily beating Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-4.

Eighth-seeded John Isner, the American who won at Atlanta two weeks ago, beat France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Also, Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation beat 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (3); Ilya Ivashka of Belarus topped American Ryan Harrison 7-6 (5), 6-4; and American Frances Tiafoe edged Canada's Milos Raonic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1.

Earlier Wednesday, tournament officials announced that Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina had withdrawn because of a left wrist injury.

Del Potro wrote on Twitter that his wrist "needs some days of rest".

Del Potro, who had a bye in the first round, was set to play Robin Haase, with the Dutchman instead facing lucky loser Mikhail Youzhny.
