Sky's Moscon handed five-week ban

Gianni Moscon has been handed a five week suspension from the UCI Disciplinary Commission for violent conduct at the 2018 Tour de France. Video footage showed Moscon raising his fist to the French rider Élie Gesbert and the race commissaires said the Italian had been disqualified for "particularly serious aggression".

"We accept the UCI's decision to suspend Gianni for a five-week period", Brailsford said.

The Italian was seen hitting out at Frenchman Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Samsic) close to the start of stage 15 of the race. The stage was won from the breakaway by Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana).

The incident 800metres into the stage was just the latest in a long line of disciplinary mis-steps from Moscon, who was suspended for six weeks a year ago after racially abusing fellow rider Kevin Reza.

The team also issued a written warning and sent him on a diversity awareness course.

When asked directly, Brailsford would not rule out terminating Moscon's contract, but Team Sky have now stopped short of that action.

He was also disqualified from last year's World Championship road race after hanging onto a team vehicle.

Sky boss Dave Brailsford said he had taken Moscon's age, and the febrile atmosphere at last month's Tour - where Sky's riders were regularly booed and even spat at - into consideration when making his decision not to sack the rider from the team. We are confident Gianni truly regrets his actions and has learnt from this episode.
