Tottenham first Premier League team to fail to make one summer signing

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he is "not confident" of signing another player before Thursday's transfer deadline at 17:00 BST.

Liverpool have invested heavily over the summer as they look to pose a challenge to last season's runaway champions, Manchester City, but the same can't be said for United.

Even though the Liverpool side that will begin their latest attempt to win a first English top flight title since 1990 against West Ham at Anfield can not be compared to the iconic teams in the club's past right now, I have rarely felt more confident in what lies ahead as a new season beckons for a Reds squad oozing with talent and depth.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season. "I'm not confident and the market closes today so it is time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed, so I will have to focus on the players I have".

The former Arsenal and England striker believes the Reds' summer transfer business can catapult them above Pep Guardiola's record-breaking champions.

"I focus on just what we have, and we go with everything we have to the first match".

Having knocked City out of the Champions League last season, while also beating them in domestic action, Liverpool are expected to mount a strong challenge for the title as they look to end their 29-year wait to be crowned kings of English football.

United had been hoping to sign a centre-back before the deadline but hope has faded in recent days.

Jerome Boateng was another option but Bayern Munich have not been keen to sanction a loan move.

The lack of new signings will compound issues surrounding his squad for the start of the Premier League season.

Sergio Romero, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Dalot, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic will all be unavailable for Friday's opener against Leicester.

As far as the rest are concerned, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini are very unlikely to feature as they only returned to training on Monday. It's about if you really need them or not and then if you can get your target or not.

"Because it is very important how they feel and to understand how they think they can help or not help".

Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all came back early from their own extended breaks but Mourinho sounded downbeat again when he was asked about the new season. "Every team in the league will be thinking 'what a great midfield that is.' The way in which United are being talked about this pre-season it's as if they've got a load of bums playing for them". "I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues but I keep feeling the second last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game".
