Wake Forest assistant basketball coach charged with assault in deadly NYC attack

Jamill Jones right was charged with assault in connection with a deadly attack on tourist Sandor Szabo in New York City

Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones has been charged with assaulting a tourist who later died in the hospital, according to a report from the New York Post.

Jamill Jones allegedly slugged Boca Raton marketing professional Sandor Szabo so hard on Sunday that he fell backward, hit his head on the concrete and lost consciousness.

According to NBC New York, Szabo had knocked on Jones' auto window, mistaking the vehicle for his Uber ride. Sources told the paper that Szabo was intoxicated and banging on cars outside his brother's hotel while looking for a ride that he had called. Jones allegedly punched Szabo after the victim banged on his auto. The incident came after Szabo punched a resident who came outside amid the ruckus, according to The Post, which led Jones to act.

Jones is entering his second year on Demon Deacons' coach Danny Manning's staff.

Wake Forest University said Thursday night that they had just learned of Jones' arrest and would release a statement at a later time. He previously held assistant coaching jobs at the University of Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University and Florida Gulf Coast University.
