Steven Gerrard calls on Rangers to make Ibrox a fortress

Rangers reject West Brom’s bid for James Tavernier

"Good players get attention from other clubs".

The window remains firmly open in Scotland until the end of the month and Gerrard has admitted that Rangers could use it to their advantage.

Speaking after Rangers' 3-1 win against Maribor on Thursday - a result that left Ibrox side in command of their Europa League third qualifying round tie - Gerrard questioned the timing of West Brom's approach for the right-back James Tavernier.

And the Rangers manager replied: "Possibly".

And if the Gers can book a spot in the group stage of the Europa League, then Gerrard could have even more cash to spend.

"We can't just think "Oh well, it's a big game today we'll turn up". For me, he's a Premiership footballer.

"The expectations are high but I feel that with every home game we're getting a little more confidence". It is up to James whether he tells you what has been said between us over the past few days but he has had my full backing and full support. "He won't be too long but will still be a couple of weeks I would think".

"He's a leader and a very likeable guy in the dressing room".

'He has been through a lot of turbulence in his time at the club but handled it very well. That's why I gave him the armband.

Mitja Viler cancelled out the Morelos opener before the break as Maribor finished the first half strongly.

'I wouldn't stand in anyone's way if they want to play for another team in their favourite position.

But Gerrard believes his side will be hard to topple if they can repeat their second-half display.

"The second half performance last night was the strongest we've looked for 45 minutes".

He said: "It's always nice to get a bigger advantage in Europe".

"We have got a big league game, our first at home and it's important we get off to a positive start and get maximum points".

"But we corrected it at half-time and we were sensational from then on and thoroughly deserved to come away with a 3-1 lead rather than 2-1". 'It's very close to how we want it to look.

Gerrard said: "To be honest, I thought he was brilliant in the 11 or 12 minutes he was on at the weekend".
