Butlin's says guest records may have been hacked

Vic Frankland of 33 Green Bottles Stubbington Fareham has just launched 33 Stubbington gin with his wife Carla

Butlins, which has a branch in Skegness, has confirmed that up to 34,000 of its guest records may have been accessed by an unauthorised third party.

It is understood that the data breach occurred this week, when criminals gained access to the company's systems using a "phishing" email.

The holiday firm, which has a site in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, said it takes guest data seriously.

The firm is now contacting people who may have been affected to inform them and tell them what they should do.

Individuals who believe they may have been affected should be cautious not to give out any additional details when contacted by individuals who say they are from Butlin's, as this is a common activity by fraudsters following data breaches. "I would like to apologise for any upset or inconvenience this incident might cause", King said.

"We can not be definitive at the moment with regard to whether all data was hacked", the spokesman told the BBC.

"This breach was the result of a phishing email, demonstrating the crucial need to train staff so they can recognise increasingly sophisticated communications that purport to be genuine", said Jocelyn Paulley at law firm Gowling WLG.

The holiday company is known for its budget staycation holiday camps.

The company has also reported the incident to the Information Commissioner's Office and says it will be "putting more measures in place to reduce the risk of something like this happening again".
