Chinese tourist dies after hippo attack in Nakuru

A Chinese tourist was killed while taking

Wildlife service spokesman Paul Udoto said the circumstances are not clear in which the two Chinese were attacked.

The middle aged foreigner died hours after he was attacked by the hippo near Sopa Lodge South Lake while visiting the lakeside town.

In the first incident, the Chinese national identified as Chuang Hun was in the company of friends taking pictures on the shore of the lake when the hippo attacked. He said attacks on tourists are rare because they are usually protected by guides.

Witness James Omollo said the man got too close to the animal which turned against him, biting him on the chest.

"His colleague survived with minor bruises and was treated at #Naivasha District Hospital".

"He was rushed to Naivasha sub-county hospital bleeding profusely but he passed on while undergoing treatment", he said.

They added that they were tracking the hippo.

On Sunday, Kenyan newspaper The Star quoted the head of a boat owners' association in Navaisha as saying that higher than normal water levels were causing hippos to wander from the lake on to nearby farms and hotel properties searching for pasture.

Hippos, which are aggressive, have sharp teeth and weigh up to 2,750kg (three tons), kill an estimated 500 people every year in Africa.

Naivasha is a city on the lake 56 miles (90km) northwest of the capital, Nairobi.

Tourism is one of the country's main sources of foreign exchange and almost 1.5 million tourists visited Kenya past year, according to the tourism ministry.
