Greek teen Tsitsipas upsets defending champ Zverev

Bernard Tomic to play the Rafa Nadal Open in late August

Tsitsipas will play his first ATP Masters 1000 final on his 20th birthday on Sunday against world number one Nadal after the Spaniard defeated Karen Khachanov 7-6 (3) 6-4 in their rain-delayed evening match.

He had beaten world number eight Dominic Thiem in the second round and then dispatched Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic before beating Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals.

Zverev refused to give any credit to Tsitsipas after the match.

The variety seemed to work against the hard-serving South African, who did not convert one of his four-break point opportunities in the two-hour 48-minute match.

Tsitsipas fired an ace for an 8-7 lead and converted his third match point when Anderson's return sailed long.

Under a blazing afternoon sun, Tsitsipas and Anderson relied on their service games in the opening set on the showcase hardcourt. "Today was an absolute pathetic match I don't even think he played well", Zverev said, per John Horn. He fought back from a break point again in the eighth and the set went all the way to a tiebreak.

"I don't know if I got lucky with all those players, but somehow it happened that I played four top 10 and managed to beat them, which is a huge achievement for me and for my game this week".

Tsitsipas admitted he was so focused on each point in the third-set tiebreaker that he actually lost track of the score. "It's not the first time".

"On the one match point that I had, he came up with an unbelievable backhand cross-court victor - it was a very impressive effort from him".

Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled off another upset Friday at the Rogers Cup, and top-seeded Rafael Nadal rallied at night to join the Greek teenager in the semifinals.

Khachanov, the world No. 38, hadn't lost a set this week entering his match against Nadal, who has won this tournament on three occasions.

The South African had a match point of his own at 7-6, but Tsitsipas delivered a brilliant backhand crosscourt victor to pull even. Anderson beat fifth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2.

Canadian doubles great Daniel Nestor was to be inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame before the late semifinal.
