Koepka leads by two strokes after third round at PGA Championship

Golf ball lands just a few feet from Dustin Johnson as he's taking a shot

Only good ol' Midwestern hospitality could save this PGA Championship from itself, along with appreciative, single-day crowds that seemed big enough to fill Busch Stadium for a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

No one caught Woodland, meaning his 36-hole score of 130 stood as the PGA Championship record. What Koepka possesses in sheer strength, Scott showcases in a fashion more lean. His silky-smooth swing is back firing on all cylinders, and if the broomstick putter cooperates (Scott is 24th in strokes gained putting this week), he could add a second major to his 2013 Masters victory. For most of the time he was winning his 14 majors, Tiger was a supreme player who got out front and didn't make mistakes.

Ten players were within four shots of the lead, which includes defending champion Justin Thomas (68), Jason Day (67) and Stewart Cink, the 2009 British Open champion who played with Woods and matched his 66.

A crowd of reporters laughed at Koepka's retelling, but it's clear this is one golfer who doesn't often find real or imagined slights amusing. "They were like, 'Did you see that, No. 1 player in the world was here.' It's like, yeah, OK". The previous three majors were more like a microwavable Stouffer's meal.

At the U.S. Open, four of the world's top 10 failed to make the weekend - Spieth (4), Rahm (5), McIlroy (6) and Day (8). The third round was marred by a botched course setup and Mickelson's antics on the 13th green.

Birdies were abundant early, a hint that scoring conditions might rival those of Friday, when three players made a run at matching the all-time low major round of 62 by Branden Grace of South Africa from last year's British Open.

Spieth refused to acknowledge he's out of it entering Sunday's final round. But McIlroy faltered on Sunday playing in the final group, and Woods and Mickelson were never a factor.

"For 29 holes I made three bogeys and played pretty clean - two of those were three putts". And Koepka didn't even tee it up because of a wrist injury. This isn't about the leader, Brooks Koepka, as much as it is about the men in position to topple him, even though Koepka is a two-time U.S. Open champ who approaches the final rounds of majors the way John Wayne approached the swinging doors of Wild West saloons.

"Looking back, I'm going through all the scenarios and [the ball] was sitting in a little bit of where an old twig had been in mud and also slightly underground, which means you try to play the low shot, it could pop out high", he said. "I know that that's in the bag", Spieth said.

To top things off, weather blew in early in the afternoon (thunderstorms are always possible when you have your tournament in St. Louis late in the summer) and canceled play for the day at 4:35 PM Eastern, meaning after a full morning without golf, anyone who had planned on spending the day with the broadcast was out of luck.

Seeking to add a second major title to his 2013 Masters triumph, Scott will tee off in the last group at the year's final major alongside two-time US Open victor Koepka.
