Retired striker Ronaldo in intensive care

Ronaldo is suffering from pneumonia

Brazilian World Cup victor and legendary striker Ronaldo has been admitted to an intensive care unit with pneumonia while on vacation in Ibiza, according to local reports.

Newspaper Diario de Ibiza said the two-time Ballon d'Or victor and 2002 World Cup Golden Boot victor is now in the intensive care unit at the private Policlinica Nuestra Senora del Rosario hospital on the Spanish island, having been taken to a public hospital on the island on Friday evening.

It is reported he was transferred to a private hospital called Clinica Nuestra Señora del Rosario later the same day.

Hospital sources have said he is still in intensive care but making good progress.

During his glittering career Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times, in 1996, 1997, and 2002. He is thought to have arrived on the island a few days ago before his illness started.

Ronaldo went down with dengue fever in January 2012 and posted a picture of himself on Twitter hooked up to a drip in hospital alongside the message: "Good morning to all those who began the New Year with dengue". Tissue swells, and it can cause coughing and breathing difficulties. Throughout a prosperous career, he scored 62 goals in 98 global appearances for Brazil.

He hit eight goals and scored in every match in Brazil's 2002 World Cup win apart from the quarter-finals en route to lifting the trophy in Japan.

During his playing career, Ronaldo was famous for his blistering pace and phenomenal goal-scoring record.

Since retirement, however, he has battled thyroid problems and gained significant weight.
