Simona Halep easily advances to Rogers Cup final in Montreal

Sloane Stephens reaches Rogers Cup semifinals

Barty fought back to deuce to delay the inevitable, but Halep secured another break to reach her third Canadian final in four years.

Barty will play the Romanian for the first time after dispatching Kiki Bertens 6-3 6-1 in less than an hour to extend her ideal record over the Dutchwoman to two matches.

Saturday's semifinal will mark the first career meeting between Halep and Barty.

Her latest win means she has claimed eight of her last nine matches on hard courts, though making her third final of the season appears daunting.

The forehand of world number three Stephens proved too much for Svitolina to cope with in the WTA Premier 5 event in Montreal, where the American emerged a 6-3 6-3 victor in a contest that lasted one hour and 40 minutes and was tighter than the scoreline suggests. Making the finals here is incredible.

"I can play my singles, do my best in my singles, then worry about the doubles when we have to". "I pushed her. on her backhand; then I could just receive a shorter ball, an easier ball for me to open the court", Halep told the WTA website. "I played some slices".

"I'm very happy to come through and get a little bit better during the match".

"Then I just went all the way on her forehand - short, cross, long, everything".

Svitolina rallied briefly to get back to 5-3 but then handed Stephens another break and the first set when she sent a forehand wide.

The American baseliner broke again for 3-1 in the second set and closed it out in 1:38.

Barty grabbed a consolation break of serve to make it 4-2, but was unable to claw back another break as Halep took the first set 6-4. Really pleased with that.

Barty made up for her singles loss with a semifinal win in doubles, teaming with Demi Schuurs to beat Nicole Melichar and Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3.
