Brooks Koepka's girlfriend Jena Sims seemed giddy over hug with Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods in his Sunday red is creating some more major championship magic at Bellerive.

"The overall day, I feel like I played well today", Woods said after his round.

By the turn, he held the outright lead at seven under and appeared set to crown a stunning comeback with his 15th major title.

After a strong start, Woods began to struggle on the par-4 fifth hole, starting a stretch in which he seemed to need a Global Positioning System to find a fairway.

Mickelson shot 71 and finished at 4 over par, missing the cut by 4 strokes.

Dialled in on the back nine, he dropped an approach into 4 feet on No. 12, got within one shot with a 10-foot birdie on the par-3 13th and, after a bad drive led to bogey, he answered with another approach that hit a foot from the hole.

Even Tiger's PGA Tour frat brothers gathered around televisions in Bellerive's clubhouse to watch a moment many, perhaps even Tiger himself, thought would never happen. And on 7, he managed to convert for par and remain in a gaggle of golfers at 9-under.

Successive birdies for Woodland on the second and third moved him back into the lead at 10 under, a bogey on the fourth dropping him back alongside Kisner who strung together six consecutive pars.

Tony Finau's run of top-10 finishes in major tournaments likely will end this weekend, but only after the Salt Lake City native has staged another spectacular performance. "He didn't just have the driving, he had the iron game, he had the putting and made some key up-and-downs the last couple rounds, I saw, to keep himself in the tournament", Woods said. He missed only on the first hole at Bellerive Country Club when his putt stubbornly refused to fall.

Only a three-putt bogey at the fifth hole halted his progress, though he put the setback quickly behind him to birdie the next three holes.

Woods, whose earlier charge on the easier front nine raised the massive gallery's excitement to fever pitch, was among a logjam of six trailing by four shots.

Woods, with a 2:35 p.m.

Koepka opened birdie-birdie to grab the lead after Woodland made bogey at the second but Woodland birdied the third hole to pull level on 10-under.

He would par the par 5 and arrive at the 18th green three strokes behind Koepka to chants of "Let's go, Tiger".

Tiger conceded that his tie for sixth last month at Carnoustie hurt, it was every bit the missed opportunity considering that at one point his name was atop the iconic bright yellow leaderboard on Sunday in Scotland.

After resuming, Fowler joined Brooks Koepka with a share of third on eight under, while Woods, McIlroy and Shane Lowry all moved up the standings.
