Johnny Manziel shows improvement despite Alouettes loss

Ottawa Redblacks

The former Heisman Trophy victor had an improved outing after his disastrous first start last weekend.

Most importantly, he didn't get picked off a week after throwing four interceptions in his first game with the Alouettes, who traded for Manziel last month.

Manziel finished 16-of-26 for 168 yards with no interceptions while adding 36 rushing yards on three carries.

"The thing that was frustrating in the first half particularly was we were moving the ball well enough, we were able to do a lot of stuff, but we turned the ball over I think four times in the first half", said Campbell. "Anything is better than last week".

However, with an extra week's work under his belt and a much improved line in front of him, Manziel is beginning to show flashes of brilliance that may make his Canadian adventure successful after all. It was tough to watch.

On Saturday night, Johnny Manziel woke up from his nightmare.

Yikes. Thankfully, he appeared to come out of the game feeling OK.

Montreal sits last in the CFL's East Division, while Ottawa is on top - the only team in the division with a winning record. It was one of those games that was going back-and-forth. He threw a second-quarter interception Chris Ackie returned for a touchdown.

Redblacks rookie Lewis Ward broke Luca Congi's CFL record for most consecutive field goals made by a first-year player after knocking in his 22nd straight. He made a 33-yarder earlier in the quarter to cut Montreal's lead to 17-14.

The lone point scored by either team in a turnover-filled first quarter came after Montreal's Bede booted a 57-yard punt into the Ottawa end zone for a single. The Alouettes were up 9-5 at the half.

The Alouettes dropped to 1-7 on the season and are scheduled to visit the Edmonton Eskimos at 8 p.m. ET Saturday.
