More than 100 Leave constituencies that backed Brexit would now vote Remain

New poll shows over 100 pro-Brexit seats have switched to support Remain since 2016 referendum

More than 100 Leave constituencies across the United Kingdom now back Remain, a major new study has revealed.

The analysis also found a number of prominent Leave supporting MPs now reside over constituencies that appear to no longer back Brexit.

Constituencies found to have switched from Leave to Remain include Boris Johnson's seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip and Michael Gove's constituency Surrey Heath.

The research comes from consumer analytics company Focaldata, who compiled it form two YouGov polls taken both before and after the publication Theresa May's Brexit proposal on July 6.

In 2016 it is believed in England, Scotland and Wales 229 seats were Remain and 403 were Leave seats.

Even though polls regularly report a strong lead for Remain among Labour voters, a majority of the party's constituencies backed Brexit in 2016, leaving party strategists wary of any suggestion that it might not deliver withdrawal. The new analysis released today shows that public opinion in 112 seats has shifted and that there are now 341 seats with majority Remain support, compared to 291 that are majority Leave seats.

Only one seat switched in Scotland.

The analysis, obtained by The Observer, suggested the development was driven by growing doubts about the case for Brexit among Labour voters in the north of England and Wales.

Remain supporters in Knowsley on Merseyside have increased from 47.6 per cent to 61 per cent, and Swansea East saw the Remain vote rise from 37.9 per cent to 50.7 per cent.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable, who spoke at the rally, said: "The Government are making a mess out of Brexit - but it is not a done deal".

"The British people should have the final say. The shallow argument against giving the people their say diminishes towards nothingness with every passing day". Over 150,000 people were polled in total.

Best for Britain campaigner and Labour MP said David Lammy: "With a majority of constituencies now in favour of remaining in the European Union, I call on my colleagues across the house to think about which side of history they want to be on".
