Ronan O'Gara set to join the rugby hall of fame

Ronan O'Gara celebrates with Brian O'Driscoll

Williams receives the honour for "an outstanding contribution to the game of rugby", a World Rugby statement said, and for "demonstrating rugby's character-building values of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect".

O'Gara will be honoured in a special ceremony in London on September 12.

Australian World Cup victor Stephen Larkham, Pierre Villepreux of France, former All Black Bryan Williams and ex-Wales captain Liza Burgess will also be recognised for their achievements.

"On behalf of the rugby family we would like to congratulate this year's five new inductees, Stephen Larkham, Ronan O'Gara, Pierre Villepreux, Byran Williams and Liza Burgess as they are recognised and honoured for their vast contributions to rugby".

World Rugby's Hall of Hame began honouring inductees in 2006 and Williams is No 141.

It continues a big year for Sir Bryan Williams, who was knighted for services to rugby in the New Year's Honours list.

The Cork man earned 128 caps for Ireland in a 13-year worldwide career and is the country's all-time record points scorer (1083).

During his playing career, O'Gara won 130 global caps - 128 for Ireland and two with the Lions, making O'Gara Ireland's second-most capped player in history after Brian O'Driscoll.

He also won two Heineken Cups with Munster and was part of three Lions touring parties.

A superb reader of the game, a move into coaching was the natural course of action for O'Gara once he hung up his boots.

Since retiring in 2013, O'Gara has also proved successful as a coach, working with Racing 92 between 2013 and 2017 as defence coach as the French club reached the European Cup final in 2016, before moving to New Zealand as assistant coach to the Crusaders, who recently won the Super Rugby title.
