Sevilla Threaten Super Cup Action Against Barcelona

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced that teams could field an unlimited number of players without European Union citizenship, a change in the rules for La Liga, which limits teams to three non-EU players in a matchday squad.

Barca, therefore, could easily field only three non-EU players rather than risking the match.

The video assistant referee (VAR) was used for the first time in Spanish football on Sunday to award midfielder Pablo Sarabia with Sevilla's opening goal against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

The federation's rules normally only allow for teams to register five non-EU and use three in a matchday squad for La Liga games, and Sevilla made their objections clear on Saturday night. In their last notice for the 18-19 season, only three were due to be permitted, without exception.

Sevilla have threatened to pull out of their Spanish Super Cup match against Barcelona on Sunday, following a late rule change.

However, this is the first time it will played outside Spain, with the encounter billed to take place in Tangier, Morocco.

"The club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona line up with more than three non-EU players, it would present a possible ground for filing a complaint due to an improper line-up".

But the club could also call upon defender Marlon (Brazil), taking the total up to four.

Despite the adjustment potentially giving his side an edge, Barca boss Valverde is also far from content. "With all the trouble we have had this week with non-EU squad members, they could have warned us before".

NAIJ.com previously reported that Lionel Messi has been named Barcelona captain following Andres Iniesta's exit from Camp Nou.
