US President Donald Trump endorsed calls on Sunday (Aug 12) for a boycott of tariff-hit Harley-Davidson over its plans to move production of its iconic American motorcycles out of the country. A really bad move!

Cox's comment is striking given the context of bikers' complaints, and Trump's push for more products to be made in the U.S.

Trump sent the tweet from his golf resort in Bedminster, N.J., where he hosted members of "Bikers for Trump" on Saturday afternoon.

The Wisconsin-based motorcycle manufacturer announced a plan earlier this year to move production of motorcycles for the European Union from the United States to its overseas facilities to avoid the tariffs imposed by the trading bloc in retaliation for Trump's duties on steel and aluminium imports. Harley-Davidson said the tariffs would add about $2,200 to the cost of the average bike built in the USA and exported to the trading bloc.

The company has repeatedly described the Thailand factory, along with other overseas production, as vital to its long-term need to boost foreign markets to make up for sluggish sales in the US.

The iconic Wisconsin-based company announced late last month a new global growth plan aimed at revamping its US business and expanding internationally.

"I'm riding my last Harley", Gary Rathbun, a 67-year-old retired truck driver attending the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in North Dakota, told the newspaper.

An array of USA companies have complained they are being hurt by the administration's tariff policies.
