Unemployment rates hold steady for Lloydminster region

Ontario saw an increase of 61,000 jobs, all of them part-time, dropping the provincial unemployment rate by half a percentage to 5.4 per cent.

Compared to past year in July, unemployment has decreased by 2.6 per cent from 7.1 per cent for the area. Data compiled prior to 1987 reflects different metropolitan boundaries and isn't comparable, the federal agency says.

After three straight months of climbs, the unemployment rate in western Alberta has dropped.

However, the area's labour force dropped 775,900 people in July, from 779,300 people in June.

The decline in the number of people working in Ottawa-Gatineau came despite a spike in government employment. The city started the year at 8.4 and has seen peaks and troughs throughout, touching a low of 6.7 per cent in March.

Across Canada, 54,100 jobs were added to the economy in July.

The total number of hours worked in July expanded 1.3 per cent, a slightly slower pace than the June reading of 1.4 per cent.

The Canadian dollar is down to $0.7651 cents USA and oil is up $0.45 to $67.26 a barrel.

Most of the good news was on the Quebec side of the river, which added 500 net jobs in July compared to June. Employment in the goods-producing sector fell by 36,500 jobs, mostly in manufacturing, while the services sector gained a net 90,500 positions, the majority in education and health care.

Data for industry sectors is not adjusted for seasonality.

Prince Albert has added about 200 jobs since previous year, but the city's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate has jumped by 0.8 percentage points, the latest labour market estimates from Statistics Canada show.

"While a lot of the attention is going to go to the fact that this was a very large increase in headline employment, it is not almost as strong as that number makes it seem", said Andrew Kelvin, senior rates strategist at TD Securities.
