NVIDIA Officially Announces Turing GPU Architecture at SIGGRAPH 2018

NVIDIA Quadro RTX Graphics Cards With Turing GPU

"Turing will reset the industry, opening up unbelievable creative possibilities that until recently were assumed to be years away". It's been rumoured for quite some time that Nvidia's next flagship would carry the GTX 11 series moniker, however names within the trailer indicate that this isn't the case. According to Nvidia, a Turing-based GPU is capable of a mighty 16 teraflops. The arrival of real-time ray tracing is the Holy Grail of our industry. Back then it was believed to be running on four Volta GPUs but, as it turns out, it was actually on a single Turing GPU that was still in development. Despite the card remaining hidden behind the ambiguous title of "NVIDIA Graphics Device", this is speculated to be the RTX 2080, as nothing now on the market outshines Nvidia's Volta architecture found within the TITAN V.

At the core of the Turing architecture are what NVIDIA is referring these as two "engines"- one for accelerating Ray Tracing, and the other for accelerating AI Inferencing. SMs and CUDA cores are what matter for general applications like gaming; Tensor cores and the RT core will be used for AI and ray tracing. However, you can clearly see a new backplate with intricate new details. For now, Nvidia is only talking about its professional-level Turing cards.

While Nvidia's focus was on the use of the Quadro RTX for real-time ray tracing, the hardware also includes other tweaks: in addition to between 3,702 and 4,608 CUDA processing cores per card, depending on model, the Quadro RTX family also includes between 384 and 576 Tensor Cores, created to accelerate deep-learning and other artificial intelligence tasks. Furthermore, Samsung 16Gb GDDR6 memory operates at 1.35V, compared to the 1.55V consumed by GDDR5, and will consume about 35 per cent less power.

Despite pricing starting at a cool $3,000 (£2,342), Turing's tech opens up the virtual effects industry to small businesses instead of multi-million-pound creative agencies.

In more unofficial territory, Ashes of the Singularity (AotS) benchmarks have been leaked onto the game's database, showcasing a device that outperforms Nvidia's top-of-the-line TITAN V graphics card at 4K and even 5K resolution.
