Blue light from phones, tablets can speed blindness

A new research study is suggesting that the light being emitted from the very device you are using to read this article could very well affect your vision later on in life and even cause blindness.

According to a research by the University of Toledo in the United States, exposure to blue light continuously might cause poisonous molecules to be generated in the eye's light-sensitive cells and lead to macular degeneration, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

Eye disease such as macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of light-sensitive cells in the retina.

As one of the leading causes of blindness in the USA, macular degeneration does not lead to total blindness, but can make daily activities hard.

Though the amount of light coming out of your cell phone seems tolerable this could accelerate macular degeneration and other eye diseases. It results in vision loss and is the leading cause of blindness in the US.

Starr says that a non-physiologic study such as this would not warrant the Academy of Ophthalmology to update their screen-time recommendations, which maintains that staring at your device screens for long periods of time won't cause permanent eye damage.

Nowadays, Some cell phone companies are adding blue-light filters to the screens, and I think that is a good idea.

In the meantime, there are ways to lessen the effect of the blue-lit screens.

The researchers also found that a molecule called alpha tocopherol, a form of Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant found in the eye and body, can prevent cells from dying, if ingested. The blue light triggers the creation of poisonous chemical molecules in our eyes' photoreceptor cells. However, as people age, the body's weakening immune system can not adequately fight against blue light and its effects. You can unplug, wear glasses specifically created to block blue light, use night-mode on your devices, and even look for devices that have screens that do not produce the blue light. What is new, however, is the clear link to macular degeneration.
