Cheerios and other breakfast cereals found to contain weed-killing chemical

A new report might have some parents thinking twice about what they feed their kids for breakfast.

The tests were commissioned by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group after internal FDA emails surfaced past year showing chemists at the agency were testing wheat, corn, and oat foods for glyphosate and had found "a fair amount in all of them", but had not yet released those results to the public.

Familiar breakfast foods and snacks contain potentially risky amounts of a weed-killing chemical, according to a new study.

Partridge's damnation of the Environmental Working Group comes a week after Monsanto was ordered to pay $289 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper in California because it failed to warn him of the associated cancer risks.

Along with that, on December 18, the company even posted on their website a statement by the EPA, "The draft human health risk assessment concludes that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans".

EWG is urging the EPA to review the evidence linking glyphosate to increased cancer risk and other deleterious health effects - the organization also says that the EPA should limit things like the practice of applying the chemical just before harvesting.

Careful about giving your child Cheerios or Quaker Oats cereals. The company's Cunchy Granola Bars, Oats 'n Honey had 340ppb and 120ppb in its two tests.

One sample of Quaker Old Fashioned Oats measured at more than one part per million of glyphosate. Their daily glyphosate intake is estimated at 230 times the 160ppb benchmark, according to EWG.

EWG claims it discovered risky doses of glyphosate in 43 of the 45 conventionally grown oats products it tested, 31 of which it claims have unsafe amounts for children.

To add some more confusion to the fire, the National Institute of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency both recently stated that the weed-killing poison was not likely to cause cancer in humans. This is still within safe levels deemed by the Environmental Protection Agency, although it is now working on an updated assessment. Since then, federal regulators in the US have continued to maintain that it is unlikely to cause cancer.

The world's most widely used herbicide isn't carcinogenic, but it's now a corporate toxin. It can also be used on produce such as spinach and almonds. Five of the organic products tested positive, as well. And 1.3 per cent of those were at levels higher than the level considered acceptable in Canada.

The study says that the herbicide was even found in a few organic products.

"This data was evaluated by Health Canada and no human health concerns were identified", the agency said in its report.

"I grew up eating Cheerios and Quaker Oats long before they were tainted with glyphosate", said EWG President Ken Cook as quoted in a report in KARE 11.

The Environmental Working Group commissioned independent laboratory tests for glyphosate, an herbicide linked to cancer, on more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods.
