Trump cancels military parade after Pentagon delay

Трамп розповів про справжню причину скасування військового параду

It looks like President Trump's military parade is going to cost a lot more than the initial estimate suggested - about $80 million more.

The city's estimates of the $21.6 million for local costs includes $13.5 million for police, $3.6 million for fire and paramedics, $2.3 million for transportation services (including traffic control and work on Pennsylvania Avenue before and after the event), and a number of lesser expenses.

"Whoever told you that is probably smoking something that's legal in my state but is not in most states", said Mattis, who hails from Washington state, where pot is legal.

"I'm not dignifying that number ($92 million) with a reply".

The Defense Department had announced on Thursday there would be no parade in 2018. "I'll just leave it at that", Mattis told reporters traveling with him.

Instead of a parade, Trump will attend an event at Andrews Air Force Base on another day. The Pentagon later said the Korea drills, which typically take place every August, would have cost $14 million - an amount dwarfed by the estimated cost of the parade. "Any cost estimates are pre-decisional". It also was expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers, which can carry significant costs in personnel, aircraft and support. Big, heavy tanks could tear up streets in the District of Columbia.

The parade is expected to begin at the Capitol, continue past the White House and end at the National Mall, according to earlier reports from NBC News. US Northern Command, which oversees US troops in North America, is responsible for the actual execution of the parade.

As for Trump's desire for parades, they began a year ago after he visited France to meet with Emmanuel Macron and became enamored with the country's military festivities.

The White House budget director said it would cost between $10m (€8.7) and $30m (€26.3m).

The festivities would honor US military veterans and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.
