Argument over Aretha Franklin biopic leads to shooting

A shooting broke out in Virginia on Thursday due to an argument dealing with the casting of Aretha Franklin's biopic.

Police said they could not verify the claims the men's argument revolved around Franklin.

Police said the fight turned physical and then one of the subjects, identified as 44-year-old Michael Jermell Hatton, produced a firearm, shooting the other man at least once outside the shop.

According to police, Michael Jermell Hatton, 44, and Tony Jonathan Lundy, 47, began arguing inside of a barbershop over whether Halle Berry had or was going to play the "Queen of Soul" in her biopic.

Hatton also was treated for injuries and transported to a local jail, where he was being held without bail.

WTKR reported that a witness said the shooting stemmed from an argument over whether actress Halle Berry could play singer Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday, in a film. However, at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, Berry said in a red carpet interview, "I can't sing!"

Now, we know Halle Berry has played some roles y'all didn't want her in, and some are still hurt about what they think to be a lackluster portrayal of Catwoman on Berry's part. If I could carry a tune, I'd consider it.

Franklin herself named reportedly named Berry as her first choice for the role in 2011. Instead, Jennifer Hudson was tapped to play the Queen of Soul in the film. "There are a number of other leading ladies out there that can definitely handle the role. Many actors have portrayed vocalists by lip-synching to the artists' original recordings".
