Coles stores closed as nationwide checkout glitch causes chaos

Supermarket chain Coles is known for its catchy slogan (watch above) in its advertising material: "Down, down, prices are down".

Another expressed outrage at the lack of communication from the supermarket giant who only hinted at the extent of the chaos through vague signage.

It's understood not all stores are closed.

A number of stores on Sunday morning posted notices on their doors about the outage, including in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, according to posts on social media. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".

The sign on its front entrance stated: "Coles is now experiencing a state-wide IT system issue and can not process any transactions".

In a statement, the company attempted to explain the glitch, which has stopped the processing of payments at registers.

Multiple reports from all over Australia on Sunday morning show signs plastered on supermarket doors notifying customers they would not open until until further notice.

"We are working to resolve the issue and will re-open as soon as possible".
