Man charged over Tuesday's Westminster attack

Salih Khater allegedly drove at a group of pedestrians and cyclists before swerving and heading at police officers.

Prosecutors are treating the incident on Tuesday as terrorism, Scotland Yard said.

Within minutes of Tuesday's morning rush-hour crash, police flooded the streets around Parliament and cordoned off an area of the city that is home to government buildings and tourist attractions including Westminster Abbey.

Khater is charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Salih Khater, a United Kingdom national of Sudanese origin and from the Birmingham area, was arrested at the scene in London by armed officers.

He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday 20 August.

It is alleged the Sudanese-born British citizen drove his vehicle into cyclists, pedestrians and officers, before crashing into the barriers outside the Houses of Parliament.

Two people injured in the incident are thought to be recovering and there have been calls for more security and pedestrianisation around parliament.

Earlier this week, a friend of Khater's told the Daily Telegraph that he was not himself as of late.
