18 million new cancer cases this year

More and more people will be afflicted with cancer in the coming years with around 18 million new instances of the disease and more than 9 million people succumbing to it, claimed a research reported in the BBC.

"These new figures highlight that much remains to be done to address the alarming rise in the cancer burden globally and that prevention has a key role to play", IARC Director Christopher Wild said.

George Butterworth, from the charity Cancer Research UK, said: "Tobacco is the single biggest reason why more women across the world are getting lung cancer than ever before".

With an estimated 1.8 million new cases in 2018, colorectal or bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, followed by prostate cancer and then stomach cancer.

He called for efficient prevention and early detection policies to be implemented urgently "to control this devastating disease across the world". Of this, 587,249 were women diagnosed with cancer. The number of cancer deaths in the country stood at 784,821.

Cancers of lung, female breast, and colorectum are the top three cancers in terms of incidence, and are ranked within the top five in terms of mortality.

The numbers published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer were slightly higher than those in the last world-wide update in 2012, when officials expected 14 million new cancer cases and 8 million deaths.

The data showed that cancer types traditionally associated with rich country lifestyles - more overweight people who are less inclined to exercise - were increasingly common in developing nations.

An increased focus on prevention - encouraging people to get exercise, quit smoking, and eating a healthy diet - led to a drop in certain types of cancer in some population groups, the IARC said.

Krug said it was also critical that countries ensure access to fast diagnosis and treatment, noting: "For those who have cancer, cancer should not be a death sentence anymore".

"Extraordinary diversity" Overall, the report estimates, almost half of all cases and most cancer deaths in the world this year will occur in Asia, partly because of the large numbers of people living in the continent and partly because some cancers with higher death rates are more common in this region.

The Americas have more than 13 per cent of the global population but account for 21 per cent of cancers and some 14 per cent of global mortality.

The highest incidence rates of this form of the disease in women are in North America, Northern and Western Europe - notably Denmark and the Netherlands - China, and Australia and New Zealand; with Hungary topping the list.

"There is more physical inactivity and that happens to be a particularly high risk factor for colon cancer, for example".

The global agency estimates based on data from 185 countries that one in five men and one in six women will develop cancer during their lifetimes.

They say because of this countries need to consider tailoring how they try to prevent and treat cancer.
