NASA posts incredible video of Hurricane Florence from space

According to the National Weather Service, as of 10 a.m. Thursday, Hurricane Florence was losing strength and was downgraded to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds at 110 miles per hour.

That funding can not be spent on disaster response, they said.

Administration officials say Mr. Merkley and MSNBC got it all wrong.

Town manager Michael Cramer told the New York Times he was anxious Florence would be even more devastating than Hurricane Hazel, which lashed the town in 1954, destroying 362 buildings.

Florence is being trailed in the Atlantic by two other storms - Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Isaac.

Where we're headed: It's too early to tell exactly how Florence will swing through the mid-Atlantic coast, but Jefferies breaks down which companies are in its potential path.

The storm could cause a life-threatening storm surge, essentially walls of water, ahead of landfall which is why FEMA warns that Wednesday is the last feasible day to evacuate areas vulnerable to the storm.

Historic and potentially catastrophic flooding is possible along with life-threating storm surges of up to 12 feet are possible along the coasts.

The storm, which is poised to affect millions this week in the southeastern USA, is "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall" to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Rainfall of over 20 inches within the next week is projected, with some pockets possibly getting 35 inches or more.

No storm watches or warnings are in effect for Georgia. About 1.7 million residents have been urged to flee from parts of North and SC.

A risky storm surge will come before the massive storm makes landfall late Friday or early Saturday.

Up to 1.7 million people have now been ordered to leave their homes as the U.S. braces for Hurricane Florence.

On Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the medical evacuation of all hospitals in flood zones in Myrtle Beach, which led to Grand Strand Medical Center transferring patients to sister hospitals, including Doctors Hospital of Augusta.

A state of emergency has also been declared in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington. A steady stream of vehicles filled with people and belongings is moving inland. Flooding well inland could wreak environmental havoc by washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.
